When the project car arrived at the shop, it was a puzzle of disassembled parts. Only the exterior panels were intact, presenting a unique challenge for the team. The restoration journey began with a careful inspection of the fit and finish of all these panels. This preliminary step ensured that when the car was disassembled for media blasting, each piece would fit perfectly upon reassembly.
The car was meticulously removed from its damaged frame and placed on a rotisserie, ready for media blasting. The original frame was beyond repair, so the customer opted for a replacement frame that had already been blasted and powder-coated, providing a solid foundation for the restoration.
The customer decided to handle the frame and drivetrain restoration themselves, allowing the team to focus exclusively on the bodywork. Once the car returned from blasting, the team began addressing the rust issues. The areas around the front and back windows were repaired first, followed by tackling the cowl rust. The old floor pan was removed and replaced with a full one-piece pan, ensuring a sturdy and clean base.
Additional rust patches were crafted for both inner rockers and the area under the rear seat pan, as well as reinforcing the original floor braces. The original trunk pan was also removed in preparation for a new one-piece trunk pan with braces. This new trunk pan was installed, and patches were added to the inner wheelhouses. The outer wheelhouses were entirely replaced with modified Chevelle outer wheelhouses, ensuring a perfect fit and enhanced durability.
The next major task was replacing the quarters with New Old Stock (N.O.S) quarter panels. The doors, once media blasted, underwent minor rust repairs before being sealed to prevent future corrosion. The team then focused on finishing the underside of the car and the shell, meticulously preparing everything to remount the body to the frame.
With the bodywork nearing completion, the project was steadily progressing towards its final stages. The team’s attention to detail and dedication to quality were evident in every repair and replacement. Updates on this meticulous restoration were eagerly awaited, promising a transformation that would bring the classic car back to life with unparalleled precision and craftsmanship.
